Travel Nurse Housing Stipend in Louisville: Making the Numbers Work

Quick answer: A travel nurse housing stipend in Louisville has to cover a whole month of lodging, and HobKnob rents fully furnished private rooms across Louisville, KY and Southern Indiana starting at around $749 per month at our Burnett Gentlemen Home in Louisville, with pricing that can change with availability. One monthly payment covers rent, all utilities, and high-speed WiFi. There is a 30-day minimum stay and the lease is month-to-month after that — extend or give notice anytime, no year-long lease.

The recruiter reads off the pay package, the housing stipend sounds generous, and for about four minutes it feels like easy money. Then you pull up hotels near the hospital, look at the nightly rate, and multiply it by thirty.

That gap is the real problem with a travel nurse housing stipend in Louisville. The stipend shows up as one monthly figure. Almost everything else in a city you have never lived in is priced by the night.

What a travel nurse housing stipend actually pays for

The housing stipend is the lodging portion of your pay package. Most agencies hand it to you and let you arrange your own place, so the difference between what they pay and what you actually spend is yours to keep.

It is not really a hotel budget. It is a month of living expenses in an unfamiliar city, and how far it goes depends almost entirely on what kind of housing you point it at.

Where the GSA lodging rate comes in

Agencies commonly benchmark the housing portion of a package against the federal per diem lodging rate the U.S. General Services Administration publishes for the county the assignment sits in. Louisville falls inside Jefferson County, KY.

For federal fiscal year 2027, which runs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, GSA lists the Jefferson County, KY lodging rate at $180 per night for October 2026, $132 per night from November through January, $185 per night from February through May, $158 per night from June through August, and back to $180 for September 2027. The separate meals and incidentals rate is $80 per day.

That seasonality is worth noticing. A contract starting in February sits against a higher lodging ceiling than one starting in December, which is one reason two nurses at the same hospital can be quoted very different stipends.

Run the monthly math before you sign

Here is what I would put on paper before agreeing to anything:

  • The GSA lodging rate for Jefferson County, KY runs from $132 to $185 per night in fiscal year 2027, depending on which month your contract starts.

  • A hotel near a Louisville hospital has to be multiplied by 30, then add parking and lodging taxes on top of it.

  • A furnished private room at our Burnett Gentlemen Home in Louisville starts at around $749 per month, which spread across a 30-day month is about $25 a day, and pricing can change with availability.

  • Private rooms in our Southern Indiana homes start at around $799 per month at the Utica Gentlemen Home in Jeffersonville, IN, roughly fifteen minutes from downtown Louisville.

  • All utilities, high-speed WiFi, and on-site laundry are already inside that monthly number, so there is nothing to put in your name.

  • The application fee is $75, and stays are a 30-day minimum and then month-to-month.

Do that once and the decision usually makes itself.

Why a private room stretches a stipend the furthest

Our co-living homes are the least expensive way to live with us. You rent a private, furnished bedroom in a well-kept house and share the living room, kitchen, and dining space with a handful of other residents. The homes are organized as Ladies Homes and Gentlemen Homes.

The Preston Ladies Home at 1215 S Preston St is a good example for anyone on a downtown assignment: six private bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and a few minutes from the University of Louisville medical campus, with rooms at The Preston running $849 to $949 per month depending on the room and current availability. Openings change often, so it is worth checking our private rooms in Louisville and Southern Indiana page for what is actually open around your start date.

When a private apartment makes more sense

If you are traveling with a partner, a child, or a dog, or you just want your own kitchen after a run of night shifts, a private furnished apartment fits better. Units at The Brownsboro in Crescent Hill start at around $1,749 per month, and the rest of our furnished apartments in Louisville and Southern Indiana are listed with current availability and pricing that can change.

The structure is the same either way: fully furnished, all utilities and high-speed WiFi in one monthly payment, a 30-day minimum stay, and month-to-month after that.

The part about your tax home

A housing stipend is only non-taxable if you maintain a legitimate tax home. IRS Publication 463 defines a tax home as your regular place of business or post of duty, and travel healthcare workers generally need to be carrying duplicate living expenses — real rent or a mortgage back home while also paying for lodging on assignment — for the stipend to stay non-taxable. Without that, the IRS can treat you as an itinerant worker, and the stipend becomes taxable income.

HobKnob is not a tax or legal advisor and none of this is advice about your situation. Keep your lease, your receipts, and your assignment paperwork, and run the specifics past your own tax professional.
