Temporary Housing in a New City: How to Make Week One Easier
Quick answer: HobKnob rents fully furnished temporary housing in a new city to people moving to Louisville, KY and Southern Indiana, with private rooms starting at around $749 per month at our Burnett home in Louisville and private apartments starting at around $1,699 per month company-wide. Pricing can change with availability. One monthly payment covers rent, all utilities, and high-speed WiFi, and there is a 30-day minimum stay with the lease going month-to-month after that — extend or give notice anytime, no year-long lease.
The job starts Monday. The moving truck does not arrive until the 19th. You have a hotel booked for four nights and a vague plan after that.
I have had that conversation more times than I can count. Somebody takes a new role in Louisville, or picks up a contract at one of the hospitals, and housing is the last thing anybody thinks about — right up until it is the only thing anybody thinks about.
Temporary housing in a new city is the pressure valve for exactly that moment. You get a real place to live while you sort out the permanent one.
Why week one is the hard part
The first week is not hard because the city is unfamiliar. It is hard because everything you normally take for granted turns into a task.
You need a bed. You need internet steady enough for a video call. You need a kitchen so you are not eating takeout for nine days straight. You need an address for your paperwork. Each one of those is a phone call, a setup fee, and a waiting period.
Think of it like landing a plane. Every item you can clear off the checklist before you touch down is one less thing competing for your attention. A furnished rental takes most of that checklist off your hands.
What temporary housing in a new city actually covers
Every HobKnob home is ready to live in on day one. In practice, that means:
Furniture already in place — bed, dresser, seating, and a dedicated workspace
All utilities on and in our name rather than yours
High-speed WiFi already running, so you are not waiting on an install appointment
A kitchen stocked with the basic cookware, dishes, and a Keurig
Common areas in our co-living homes cleaned by our team every other week
Self check-in, so your arrival time does not have to match an office schedule
One monthly payment covers the rent, the utilities, and the WiFi. There is a $75 application fee, which is the same at every home.
Private apartment or private room?
Two different answers for two different situations. If you are bringing a spouse, kids, or a dog, one of our furnished month-to-month apartments usually makes the most sense. Private apartments start at around $1,699 per month company-wide across Louisville, KY and Southern Indiana, subject to availability, and they include in-unit laundry.
If you are moving solo and want to keep the monthly number lower while the permanent plan comes together, a private room in one of our co-living homes is often the better fit. You get your own furnished bedroom and share the kitchen and living areas. Rooms at our Burnett home in Louisville start at around $749 per month, and pricing can change with availability.
Our co-living houses are organized as Ladies Homes and Gentlemen Homes, so you know the makeup of the house before you ever apply.

How the lease works when your plans are still moving
This is the part that matters most for a move you cannot fully predict.
Every HobKnob stay has a 30-day minimum, and after that it runs month to month. If your closing date slips, you stay another month. If the permanent place comes together early, you give notice and go. There is no year-long lease sitting on top of it.
That is the whole reason mid-term rentals exist. A hotel is priced for a short stay of a few nights. A traditional apartment wants twelve months and a truck full of furniture you do not own yet. Temporary housing in a new city sits in between — a month or several months, furniture already there.
Where you land in Louisville and Southern Indiana
We operate in Louisville, KY and across Southern Indiana — Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Clarksville. Where you land changes your first week more than most people expect.
Our Burnett home in Louisville sits about eight minutes from downtown and the University of Louisville, twelve from the airport, and sixteen from UPS Worldport. If your assignment is at Norton Healthcare, UofL Health, or Baptist Health, that is a short drive at most hours.
If your work is on the Indiana side, or you simply want a quieter base and do not mind the bridge, Southern Indiana is worth a look. Private rooms at our Utica home in Jeffersonville, IN start at around $799 per month, subject to availability.
A reasonable place to start
If you have a start date and no housing plan, that is a normal place to begin — most of our residents found us at exactly that point. HobKnob is locally owned and managed, so when you call you are talking to someone who knows these homes. You can schedule a tour or call us at (502) 625-6670 and we will walk through what is open for your dates.
